Text. Carol Zapata Whelan

Dear Marie,

I hope Hugo is well these days and that you are, too.  Marie, I’m writing to you because I always like to read what you send on the FOPonline, how you help Hugo and how you share things that have helped you deal with FOP.  In any case, I saved a beautiful letter you wrote back in March as it was a very inspiring letter about how we shouldn’t worry.

I’m writing a book about our family’s experience wtih FOP, but it isn’t just about FOP, it is life in a big family and the happy and difficult things that happen. It is a book about how little miracles happen when you are given something very hard in your life.

I am calling the book Magic Mountain… Marie, would you consider contributing a little story (500 words) about your experience with FOP in Sweden… Don’t worry about the English, we can correct anything that needs correcting. But you are a beautiful writer and this shines through in your letters online…”

Finding Magic Mountain

Text: Carol Zapata-Whelan

So many of the lessons about how to live life with FOP I have learned from other mothers. Another mother in Sweden, Marie Hallbert, often shares her stories. Years ago, she wrote words that have stayed with me for a long time, and that exemplify many people I know who overcome FOP daily in their lives, whether parents or children.

Kapitel 5 sid 59.

text: Marie H Fahlberg till foponline-mailgruppen 2003.

I just want to share a little story. Six years ago I read an interview with a famous Swedish girl name Kristin (Kazpersen). At that moment she was pregnant and she got the question -Are you worried about if your child is having an illness in some way?
Kristin answered -Once an old wise woman said to me “If you get a child with a disease, you will have that child because you have got the strength to handle that.”

Those words I had in my head when I was pregnant with Hugo. And when we got the diagnosis two years ago, I had the feeling that I must be a very strong and special person to get a child with a disease likeFOP. There must be something meant for me to do. And I have the same feelings about Hugo. Even if life feels like shit (sorry about the expression) sometimes, too.

– Marie Hallbert, mother of Hugo.
diagnosed at age 2,4y. Eskilstuna Sweden.

Här nedan kommer hela det foponline brev som jag skrev i mars 2004 som Carol nämner i mailet och delar av det som sedan hamnade i boken;

text: Marie H Fahlberg till foponline-mailgruppen 2004.

Hej Dee

I am mother of Hugo 5½ y old… And when I read your letter it is like reading my minds 2½y ago… I felt exactly the same way, reading about quiet times and wondering when do that quiet time appear to us? to Hugo?????.

And I do not remember when it started to “feel” more quiet... But I think it is a combination of accepting the things that happens on our child’s body, and accept that it is happening and I cant do anything!!   he is smiling ,not complaining, ok it hurts sometimes ok he gets tierd in the back (who does not.. Computers are no good for me)…just to accept that I cant do anything to stop this spontaneous FOP things… →

Kapitel 17 sid 255.

 ….And to always look, every night at Hugo’s back (the whole body) -It is getting better!!! -maybe it gets quiet for a while??? And BANG 2 days later a new big thing starting again!! It takes so much energy from us parents to worries over things we cant do anything about… So for me just one day,  thanks to foponline! I just stopped worried  and reading on foponline about all things that can happen in the future and be prepared for that day… and for all things that NOT happens to Hugo can I be happy for.

This is maybe sounds hard, but stop waiting! because you only gets disappointed when you are wrong…and when the quiet time is there for 1week be happy for 1month be happy for that time…
ps. Hugo is in a quiet time but not totally quiet there are tiny FOP things going on  on the back… he has been like this for??? I don’t really remember… I think because when it gets more quiet we have to deal with the normal children things… Say NO don’t do that.. don’t hurt your brother… Don’t scream… Eat your food.. try to put on your trousers by your self…bl,bla,
Hejsvejs  //  Marie Hugos mom from Sweden

Om boken;
